What Is Rosacea?

Rosacea is a fairly common skin condition that presents with redness on the face, visible blood vessels, and bumps that resemble acne. These symptoms mainly affect the center of the face and are most prevalent in middle-aged women. Ocular rosacea affects the eyes and causes dryness, redness, burning, and itching of the eyes.

Rosacea can look like a blush or sunburn across the nose and cheeks. Most patients with rosacea have fairly sensitive skin, especially in reaction to chemicals, spicy food, and even extreme temperatures. If you have face facial redness or acne-like bumps that do not clear up with acne treatments, it could be rosacea. Come see your Denton, TX, dermatologist for diagnosis and treatment.

How Is Rosacea Treated?

Rosacea is a chronic condition. The exact cause is unknown and there is no cure, but there are several effective treatments that can help reduce symptoms and prevent flare-ups:

  • Prescription medications to reduce redness
  • Topical treatments that include azelaic acid and metronidazole help reduce redness and inflammation
  • Laser treatments reduce the visible blood vessels

Can I Manage My Rosacea?

If you have rosacea, too much sun exposure can aggravate it. You need to wear sunscreen daily and use a product with an SPF of 30 or higher. Use your appointment with your skin doctor to talk about their recommendations for gentle cleansers and hypoallergenic skincare. Your dermatologist can also help you develop a plan to avoid triggers that spur your flare-ups and manage flare-ups when they happen.
